Thomas Alexander is currently serving as the Interim Dean of the Sophomore Class/Director of the Intercultural Center at Swarthmore College. Previously, he served as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Florida A&M University where he had oversight for Housing and Residential Life, the Student Union, Diversity and Inclusion, Student Activities, the Student Government Association, the Career Center and Campus Recreation. His broad spanning role intersected with many parts of the university which allowed for greater impact across the institution.
Prior to that, he served as the Associate Dean of Students at Bucknell University where he provided vision, direction and support to International Student Services, Multicultural Student Services, the Office of LGBTQ Resources, and the Women’s Resource Center. He led in the development of the Intercultural Equity & Advocacy (IEA); a network of collaborative offices that assists the Bucknell community to be a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for students, particularly at the intersections of culture, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, nationality, race and sexuality. Thomas served on the President's Diversity Council and was a key stakeholder and leader in the creation of Bucknell's strategic plan for diversity. In addition, Thomas supported several offices across campus to help them achieve their inclusive goals. He worked collaboratively with faculty, staff, and student organizations to implement the strategic plan and collaborated with divisions and departments such as enrollment management and multicultural teams to provide support and retention strategies that foster a sense of belonging for all students but especially for those from underrepresented groups.
He also spent 11 years as Special Assistant for Diversity to the Vice President for Student Affairs/Director of Student Involvement at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Where he spent most of his years developing strategic initiatives and partnerships. Thomas has extensive experience in interviewing, hiring and developing talented diverse and inclusive leader for senior level positions. He has served and chaired several senior level searches during his 20 plus years in academe.
Thomas holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Education in Student Personnel Services from the University of South Carolina.
